More About Joint Commission Visiting

April 6, 2012

I wanted to follow up a bit regarding the CMS discussion yesterday with our Joint Commission surveyor.  Here’s my story…

The discussion began with a request to review our risk scoring policy, specifically related to how we determine inspection frequency and procedures.  He mentioned that our policy is very similar to many of the others he has seen with categories for Physical Risk, Function, Maintenance Requirements and Rate of Failure.

Next we discussed how we determine maintenance frequency and procedures.  I stated that we use manufacturer recommendations initially and adjust our frequency and procedure over time as we learn what the device requires based on our experience.

Then he asked if I’ve seen the letter from CMS.  I explained that we are still reviewing the information to determine exactly what we will need to do to be compliant.  We discussed the difference in expectations  between the Joint Commission and CMS and the fact that we will need to comply with the most stringent requirements.  He stated that you can’t push back on CMS, they make the rules.  I did mention that we are looking at this in collaboration with other Oregon Biomed Association members to help ensure that we have a consistent response.

My impression from our discussion is that, at least right now, the Joint Commission surveyors are checking to see how we respond and aren’t too sure about this themselves yet.  I did mention that I have seen some impact since one of our vendor X-ray service technicians spent a couple of days doing a PM that used to take a few hours.  He said he was still trying to figure out all that he needed to do to be compliant with the new procedures.

I hope that helps.
